Chapter 14

Ashra marched ahead with quick steps and fumbled her phone out of the leather jacket she wore. Hardman picked up right away.

“Shah, Hynes is on the move. She bought a pair of new shoes on the market and your super agents missed it. Now she’s moving southwards through Sorhakhutte Road towards … what is it called?” he asked someone.

Chetri replied. “Ring Road near the Bhatbhateni supermarket. Heading to Baniyatar neighborhood”

“You heard him?” Hardman asked.

“She’s heading to the bus station, Gongabu Bus Park,” Ashra said with certainty.

“Yes, someone tipped her off and she’s leaving town,” Hardman said, his voice unusually tense.

“Sir, I’m five minutes away from Gongabu neighborhood. I can intercept her,” she said, ignoring the colorfully-dressed people passing her along the crowded road and mentally prepared a route through the smaller streets and alleys to get there.

“You armed?”

“No, sir. Didn’t get a service pistol yet. I’ll get her anyway.” She looked at Thomas as Hardman sighed.

“You’re with Pierce?” he asked.

“Yes, he’s right in front of me.”

“He’s got a gun—tell him to hand it to you, then get her. She’s our only lead to Trout. Don’t let her get away again.”

“Got it. Have Chetri shall call me in sixty seconds.” Ashra hung up, pulled her earpods out, and connected their cable to her phone. Then she looked at Thomas. “Give me your gun.”

Thomas looked at her with surprise. The fact that he carried a weapon wasn’t fully in line with his story of despising violence … or not being CIA. Clearly, she hadn’t been the only one with more than one motive for the date.

He pulled his backpack off his back, reached inside, and withdrew an automatic pistol. He handed it to Ashra, holding it by the barrel. It seemed clumsy, not like a man used to holding a gun, but she was no longer sure if it all wasn’t just an act. It was an M9—the standard pistol of the US military. She slipped it into her belt.

“You go straight back to headquarters.”

“I can help, Ashra—”

“You’re wounded. Go back, I’ve got this,” she only replied and began to move. Her phone buzzed and she answered immediately.

“She’s moving fast. Where are you?” Chetri asked.

“Passing Tokha Street in a minute,” Ashra said. “Get ready to give me her location.”

“Okay, we’re tracking her phone since she ditched the shoes, so it will be only a rough estimate.”

“Got it.”

Ashra began to sprint.

Tokha Street stretched out before her like a maze of obstacles, its narrow confines teeming with a chaotic swirl of humanity. Dodging and weaving through the crowds, Ashra moved with the agility of a hunted animal, her heart pounding in her chest as she fought to keep up the pace.

The air was thick with the scent of spices and incense, mingling with the cacophony of voices and the distant hum of traffic. Above her, colorful prayer flags fluttered in the breeze, their vibrant hues a stark contrast to the muted tones of the surrounding buildings.

With each step, the urgency become more oppressive, driving Ashra forward.
